Environmental workshop fights air pollution

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance convened various schools in the south of Durban to caution learners about ecological factors that affect the area. The environmental awareness campaign for children was held in Wentworth as a workshop for both high schools and primary schools.

The intention of the workshop was to educate learners on issues of air pollution. Recently, south Durban areas came into the spotlight when an American-based company conducted research that revealed that more and more people in the south of Durban area are affected by air pollution. More than 25 schools gathered for the environmental awareness workshop, including those from Queensburgh, Rossburgh, Umbumbulu and Umlazi. Learners were given a chance to engage with issues related to air pollution, renewable energy, climate change and the importance of trees. The SDCEA Coordinator, Desmond D’Sa, said the SDCEA has always endeavoured to educate people in the area. In a statement to the Southern Star, he said, "In the history of the SDCEA we have always tried to engage the youth and produce posters and documents that are useful to schools. In our twelve years of environmental activism, we have not seen as many children as we have seen in the last few weeks passing though our programmes.

Switch Off To Save Electricity

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
An inspection carried out at rental flats in Isipingo, south of Durban, found that the authorities are not assisting in reducing high energy consumption.

MF PR Councillor for ward 90 in Isipingo, Sunil Kalicharan said that some people, including authorities in the area are apathetic towards saving enough electricity as required by Eskom.

He said that in Isipingo the authorities who were supposed to play a pivotal role in the community, were lagging behind: "Rental dwelling car park lights are on 24 hours when they should only be on at night.

Flats’ passage lights have not been working for the past two months. The flats are in total darkness, this is not good for criminal activities. It is time for the authorities to address these concerns seriously." South Durban areas, including Isipingo, were recently plunged into darkness when an electricity grid pillar collapsed.

Lucky To Be Alive

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Two drivers are lucky to be alive after their vehicles were involved in a horrific accident on the N2 near Umlazi.

Two people are in a critical condition after their vehicles collided head-on south bound of the N2 in Umlazi over the weekend. The driver of a bakkie allegedly lost control and crashed into a small car.

When paramedics arrived on the scene both drivers were still entrapped inside their vehicles. Drivers were freed from the wrecked vehicles using the Jaws of Life before receiving first aid. The car was held up by a tree on the other side of the road.

Paramedics worked hard to evacuate drivers who were still inside the wrecked vehicles.

The driver of the bakkie was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition, and the other driver was rushed to a nearby hospital.

The accident caused traffic congestion and the road was closed until the vehicles were removed from the scene.

Burning Tyres Give Residents A Nightmare

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Residents in Durban southern triangle are standing up against trucking firms that are burning tyres and adding fuel to the worsening pollution problem in inner city suburbs.

The incineration of tyres has come to the fore in Clair wood, a light and heavy industrial complex where residents and industry are placed cheek by jowl.

Residents say many registered and unlicensed trucking companies and industries are making extensive use of heavy-duty truck and trailers for commercial purposes. Furthermore, Horseshoe Road residents, including children, have to put up with health hazards from a makeshift dump site that is used by local businesses to dump glass, chemical waste products and non degradable rubbish.

Burning tyres pose huge health risks to a community that has bowed under industrial pollution and traffic for more than 60 years. Outspoken South Durban Community Environment Alliance chairman Desmond Dísa has slammed the owners of trucking companies, saying: "There is no need to burn tyres that pollute the atmosphere and harm people's health when there are methods of recycling that should be put into practice.

" Residents are greeted by flames of fire on the river bank and they are concerned about the deadly toxins flowing into the water as a result of business burning rather than recycling tyres.

Quiksilver Freak Pro Hopeful In Accident

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

In what can only be described as a freak accident, South Africa's, Dane Patterson suffered a serious neck injury whilst surfing at his beloved Dairy Beach on Sunday.

Patterson, a highly skilled and competitive surfer, hit a very shallow sandbank and suffered a displaced vertebra in his neck, a classic 'broken neck' injury. It was Patterson's good friend and top surfer, Dane Logie, who dragged him out of the water. "At first I wasn't sure if he had hit his head on his board or the sand," said Logie. "But it must have been the sandbank. The waves were only about three feet, but it was super shallow."

After realising the extent of the injury, Dane was airlifted to the hospital, where he was immediately placed in ICU. Dane had been working flat out on the upcoming Quiksilver Pro Durban surfing event. "He is in good spirits and not in too much pain," said Quiksilver South Africa's Greg Swart. "It is a serious injury, but he is expected to make a full recovery. He is in our prayers right now. There will obviously be a long road of rehab, and he will be out of the water for nine months to a year, but Dane is a strong and fit guy. "

Greg, who has been spending time with Dane in the hospital, got the low-down on Dane's upcoming surgery from the doctors.

Festival Of Chariots Celebrates 20 Successful Years

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Durban 21 - 24 March Durban's Ratha-yatra (Festival of Chariots) is reputed for being the biggest festival of its kind outside of India. And this year, it will have much more to offer in celebration of its 20th anniversary on Durban's beach front.

The event, which originally began as a two day event over Christmas weekend, grew so rapidly and drew such large crowds that, over the years, it now spans four days and has had to be moved to Easter weekend to accommodate its large number of visitors.

The free cultural festival, hosted by the Hare Krishna movement, boasts a variety of activities and fun for the whole family whilst it simultaneously serves a deep spiritual purpose.

The festival expects to attract over 250 000 visitors, this year, and each guest shall be treated to a sumptuous free vegetarian meal. On Friday, 21st March at 3pm, there will be a special street parade of chanting and dancing devotees celebrating Gaura Purnima, the appearance anniversary of Lord Caitanya (an incarnation of Lord Krishna who led India's first revolution against religious intolerance). This coincides with the Human Rights theme for the day.
