Koby Oberholzer wows the crowds

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
The second of the Chemspec Fun Surf Series took place at Dairy Beach last weekend and over 100 kids entered the contest. Surfers came from Port Edward to Zululand coastlines to participate with over 25 schools in KZN.

Koby (8) is the son of famous surfer Frankie Oberholzer, and is undoubtedly showing his inherited surfing genes. He annihilated his opposition scoring a 7 and a 7.5 wave score out of a possible 10 in the finals. This put his opposition into a combination situation. This was very difficult to achieve as the onshore winds and mushy surf did not lend itself to good wave scores. But Koby pulled it off and if he wins the next contest in November he will win the series and claim the coveted trophy.

Koby said, "I am so stoked to win this. The contest was so much fun and I can't wait for the next one.

Sharks Supporter says a win is the only option

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Bull Govender, Isipingo's number one Sharks supporter said he has no doubt in his mind that the Sharks will emerge victorious in Saturday's Currie Cup final when they lock horns with the Blue Bulls at ABSA Stadium.

He indicated that he is concerned about the fact that despite the Sharks having spent a lot of money purchasing players, they still have nothing to show for it.

"But I'm confident about Saturday's final because all the players who toured with the Boks are back and will bring in that much needed experience," said Govender. Govender, ironically named ‘Bull’, revealed that last year the Boks won the World Cup on his birthday, 20 October, which according to him was the best birthday gift he ever received.

Stanvac canal gets cleaned after 15 years

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
The Merebank and Merewent community breathed a sigh of relief when work to clean up the Stanvac canal, which carries storm water through the community and into the sea, began recently.

According to area Councillor Ebrahim Shaik, the canal had not been cleaned in 15 years and as a result of this, a large amount of vegetation had grown in there causing it to become a breeding ground for snakes and "cat-sized" rats. He also revealed that it had become a dumping site for the residents in the area.

Cllr Shaik said that getting the municipality to do the work was not an easy task. "After months of engaging the municipality about this issue, I was able to get them to start the cleaning process of the canal."

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
The Africa Christian Action organisation held an Abortion Awareness campaign on Sunday 5 October as part of International Life Chain Sunday where approximately one million christians in over 900 locations worldwide stood at intersections to create an awareness on abortion and to help stop it.

The Life Chains project is one of the positive and practical ways that people can stand up for the sanctity of life and speak up for the right to life of pre-born babies.

Life Chains have been held every year since 1987 in the USA and since 1992 in South Africa. Officially, over 600 000 babies have been killed legally through abortion in South Africa since 1 February 1997.

Environmental workshop fights air pollution

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance convened various schools in the south of Durban to caution learners about ecological factors that affect the area. The environmental awareness campaign for children was held in Wentworth as a workshop for both high schools and primary schools.

The intention of the workshop was to educate learners on issues of air pollution. Recently, south Durban areas came into the spotlight when an American-based company conducted research that revealed that more and more people in the south of Durban area are affected by air pollution. More than 25 schools gathered for the environmental awareness workshop, including those from Queensburgh, Rossburgh, Umbumbulu and Umlazi. Learners were given a chance to engage with issues related to air pollution, renewable energy, climate change and the importance of trees. The SDCEA Coordinator, Desmond D’Sa, said the SDCEA has always endeavoured to educate people in the area. In a statement to the Southern Star, he said, "In the history of the SDCEA we have always tried to engage the youth and produce posters and documents that are useful to schools. In our twelve years of environmental activism, we have not seen as many children as we have seen in the last few weeks passing though our programmes.

An Audi eye for VI GTi

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
With details of the upcoming Golf VI already doing the rounds on the net, the inevitable questions as to what the next generation GTi will entail have come to the fore.

A number of sources have come forth with details that suggest the next brace of performance Golfs will borrow many mechanical bits and bobs from Audi when they emerge in Europe in the first half of 2009. This should mean that the GTi will probably emerge on our market in either late 2009 or early 2010, but if the wait is too much to bear, you can take some solace in the strong likelihood that a production-viable concept could be unveiled as soon as October.

The new GTI will get a tuned version of the company s 2,0-litre TFSI engine that will develop 158 kW and 350 N.m of torque, roughly 10 kW and 70 N.m up on the current car. One of the modifications to the EA88 engine is said to be a modified version of Audi s recently unveiled variable valve-lift system. This technology will contribute to smoother power delivery, enhanced throttle response and improved fuel economy.
